In a historic shift towards renewable energy, the European Union reached a significant milestone in June 2025: solar energy became the main source of electricity generation across the region.
EU Achieves Record Share of Renewable Electricity
In Q2 2025, renewables generated 54.0% of the EU’s net electricity—up from 52.7% in Q2 2024. The primary driver of this growth was solar energy, which alone contributed 19.9% of the total generation mix.
Solar Takes the Lead in June
For the first time, solar power led the EU electricity mix with a 22.0% share in June 2025, surpassing nuclear (21.6%), wind (15.8%), hydro (14.1%) and gas (13.8%).
Country Highlights
Denmark (94.7%), Latvia (93.4%), Austria (91.8%), Croatia (89.5%), and Portugal (85.6%) recorded the highest renewable shares. Meanwhile, Slovakia, Malta, and Czechia had the lowest.
Solar’s Role in the Renewable Mix
Among renewable sources, solar dominated with 36.8%, followed by wind (29.5%) and hydro (26.0%). Combustible renewables and geothermal played minor roles.
Year-on-Year Growth
Fifteen EU countries increased their renewable electricity share compared to Q2 2024. Luxembourg (+13.5 percentage points) and Belgium (+9.1 pp) led the gains, both driven by solar expansion.
This record-breaking performance reinforces the global trend toward solar adoption. As the EU reaches new milestones, it highlights the untapped potential for further solar energy expansion across industrial and commercial sectors.
